This dramatic moving sculpture is a unique fusion of art and engineering that links the Forth and Clyde Canal to the Union Canal 35 metres above, allowing vessels to sail through the sky!
It is the only lift of its kind in the world, and one of two working boat lifts in the United Kingdom, the other being the Anderton Boat Lift in Chehire.
Weary travellers once had a day’s heavy work navigating 11 locks that covered a 35-metre difference in height, stepping the Union Canal down to the level of the Forth and Clyde which was the world’s first sea to sea ship canal. It required 3,500 tonnes of water per run.
