With temperatures soaring, you might notice lifts going out of service. Here's what's happening behind the scenes:
Safety First: Since 1998, lift standards require automatic shutdown when electrical equipment exceeds safe operating temperatures. The lift will stop at the nearest floor, doors will open, and passengers can exit safely.
The Challenge: Lift machinery is designed to operate between 5°C-40°C. During heatwaves, inadequate ventilation in machine rooms can push temperatures beyond these limits.
Unexpected Culprit: Direct sunlight through windows can cause serious issues - from door distortion to controller cabinet overheating, especially when equipment is located near building entrances.
The Solution: Building services teams need to ensure proper ventilation and consider reflective window treatments in high-risk areas.
