Part 1

When Adams Carpets and Furniture Limited started making renovations to their premises in Brierley Hill in the West Midlands, they stumbled across a disused lift shaft with an old Pickerings Lifts plaque displayed proudly.

It’s estimated that Pickerings installed the lift and plaque in the 1930s, possibly even earlier!

🃏 Local rumours suggest that the building used to be a casino and the lift was used to take members down to the basement where illegal gambling took place… it sounds like something out of Peaky Blinders!

As a business that’s been operating since 1854, it’s fascinating to uncover finds like this and hear the associated stories of a time gone by. Although Pickerings would like to distance themselves from any unlawful goings-on!

Part 2

Pickerings are honoured to maintain the lifts at Salford Lads and Girls Club in Greater Manchester.

The iconic Grade-II listed building featured in The Smiths’ album art for The Queen is Dead and attracts fans of Manchester’s music scene from across the world. 🎵🎸

The recreational club was established in 1903 and has supported young boys and now girls by offering activities such as boxing, snooker and football, guided by positive role models in a safe and welcoming space.

Pickering’s are  proud to look after their passenger lift and provide accessibility to all visitors – Heaven knows we’re miserable when the lift is out of order.
